Overview

Zhang Peili's series of video installations reconstructs footage excerpted from older North Korean films, including gestures of argument, smiles, and tears standardized through socialist conventions. Removed from their original contexts and repositioned within Gwangju Theatre, these familiar cinematic gestures form new relationships and acquire new meanings, prompting reflection on performance and ideology, as well as collective memory across generations.
